How to Raise a Reader

Reading is awesome! Kids who are good readers are going to do better in and out of school. Reading opens the door to learning and pleasure. It’s easy to raise a reader. In fact, you’re probably doing a lot of things to encourage your child to be a reader without thinking about it.

One of the absolute best ways to raise a reader is: Read! When was the last time you curled up with a good book and lost track of time? Your children are watching and imitating you, so set a good example and read. It’s easy to put reading on the back burner when you have a full-time job, housework, yard work, errands, and a family to take care of. How about just fifteen minutes a day? Whether it’s the newspaper, mysteries, science fiction, romance, cookbooks, classic literature, or comic books, read what you enjoy and let your kids see you doing it. They’ll catch on that it’s fun without your having to say anything.

Stay tuned for next week's reading tip!
