Read Signs

Signs are a great way to help your preschooler learn to read because they have meaning built in. As you drive around your neighborhood, talk about signs. A four or five year old who knows the car stops at the corner when the red sign that says S-T-O-P is there, will easily be able to read the word STOP. Also true for EXIT, ENTER, MEN, WOMEN, etc. Once your child has mastered the alphabet, help him try it out on signs. Since he probably already knows what the sign means, it will be easy for him to ‘read’ the sign. Even though he’s not sounding out the word using the letters, he will learn the sounds of the letters by using them in a word he understands. Easy, free and fun!
