Making beads is fun and easy. You probably already have the materials you need. Beads are great for making jewelry, costumes, holiday garlands or wreaths.                                                                                                                Materials and Tools:

  1. newspaper
  2. water
  3. plastic container
  4. white glue
  5. acrylic paint
  6. varnish or shellac
  7. paintbrush
  8. plastic cup
  9. paper towels
  10. string, yarn or embroidery thread
  11. Tapestry needle
  12. drill

  1. Rip newspaper into small squares and place in container.
  2. Cover with water and let sit for 2-3 days.
  3. Add some white glue to the mixture and stir until gray and mushy.
  4. Form the mixture into balls. Squeeze the extra water out of the beads. A tablespoon of paper maché makes a 1" bead.
  5.  Place the beads on paper towels until they are completely dry, 2-3 days.
  6. Drill a hole in the center of each bead.
  7. String the beads onto a wire or toothpick so you can paint them without touching them. Paint the beads and let them dry.
  8. Add a coat of shellac or varnish to make the beads shiny.
  9. Use a tapestry needle and yarn, string, or several strands of embroidery floss to string the beads.
  10. Tie the bead on each end to the string. Leave enough string to tie the necklace in a bow.
