Read to your child!

From the time they are born, babies love to sit on their parents' lap and look at a picture book. Sure, they don't understand the words you read at first, but they're learning about books. A book's cover picture tells what the book is about. Books are read from left to right. A story has a beginning, a middle and an end. Reading is fun! Babies and toddlers are developing vocabulary at an amazing speed, and reading aloud to them provides them with new words. As they begin to point at pictures and understand the text they are building their bank of words. When your son or daughter begins to read, it's still beneficial for you to read aloud together. He can read you his copy of Cat in the Hat and you can read him a more difficult book. Ten or fifteen minutes a day is all it takes!
